Pharrell Williams is 40 years old, but looks much younger. What’s his secret? Well, it’s not feasting on human blood, that’s for sure.
During an interview with the British magazine Time Out, the interviewer informs the Grammy-winning singer and producer that people have been searching on Google for the phrase “Is Pharrell Williams a vampire?” presumably in an attempt to discover the secret behind his youthful appearance. When the interviewer asks Pharrell point-blank if he’s one of the undead, he replies, “No I am not. I’m willing to go on record as saying that I don’t drink people’s blood. How do I stay so young-looking for a 40-year-old? I wash my face.”
Also contributing to Pharrell’s youthful appearance may be the fact that life is pretty great for him right now. After being featured on two of last year’s biggest hits — “Get Lucky” and “Blurred Lines” — his own tune, “Happy,” is currently #1 on the Billboard Digital Songs chart, and #2 on the Billboard Hot 100. It’s also up for an Oscar, and he’ll perform it during the Academy Awards telecast March 2 on ABC.
Ironically, Pharrell says creating the breezy, positive song that’s featured in the animated film Despicable Me 2 took a lot of toil and trouble.
Pharrell tells ABC’s Good Morning America, “‘Happy’ has been the gift that keeps on giving. It’s a song that I would have never written without being constantly directed as to what was needed by [the producer of Despicable Me 2], and he was relentless. You know, it took me nine songs of failure in order to get the one win.”
That’s right: the hit-making musician says he literally came up with nine different versions of “Happy” before he created one that pleased the producer, Chris Meledandri. No wonder its success — and its Oscar nod — came as a surprise to him.
“I never expected for it to go this far,” laughs Pharrell. “I mean, I’m just thinking to myself, like, you know at that moment [I was writing it], I’m like, ‘How do I do it? I failed nine times!'”
“Happy” is featured on Pharrell’s upcoming album G I R L, which arrives in stores March 3.
