ABC/Rick RowellJohn Legend visited Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Monday night to plug Underground, the upcoming TV drama about the Underground Railroad, on which Legend served as an executive producer. He also marked the end of the PBS series Downton Abbey by adding lyrics to the show’s normally instrumental theme song.
Legend’s version of the song opens with the line, “Everyone we know is very white, we don’t have one black friend,” and goes on to give a two-minute synopsis of the show, including Mary and Edith, who “love to fight and dress in formal wear to dinner almost every night.”
Among the other things Legend reveals: Mr. Bates is a murderer, but very friendly; Violet Crawley, Dowager Countess of Grantham — played by Maggie Smith — is a witch who needs to get laid.
Later in the show, Legend, 37, talked about his wife, model Chrissy Teigen, 30, who is expecting the couple’s first child, conceived through IVF. He also revealed that they’ve gotten advice from many people, including Kim Kardashian West and Kanye West, who also took them baby shopping.
“She just showed Chrissy everything a mom would need at this time,” he recalls.
Kimmel then asks, “Who paid for it?” noting Kanye, “owes a lot of money, and I would feel guilty if I was you.”
“I did,” Legend assures him.
Underground premieres Wednesday on WGN America.
