Janelle Monae’s first concerts of 2014 will be make-up dates for concerts she postponed last year after straining her voice, and she’s looking forward to singing for fans who bought tickets and were disappointed she was unable to perform. She told The Hollywood Reporter that she realized she needed to rest her voice after constantly touring across the country last year.
“I was overdoing it,” she says. “I was warming up my voice for, like, two hours and then I had two-hour press, and then I had a two-hour show. And I was doing that for, like, five days out of a week for two weeks straight. ” Monae will perform January 11 in Tempe, AZ, January 13 in San Diego, CA, and January 14 in Anaheim, CA after missing those shows because of “strict doctor’s orders for mandatory vocal rest.”
Her last performance was December 29 as the opening act for Prince at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, CT, and she was thrilled when he said on stage that her Electric Lady was ”the best album released this year.” Regarding recording with Prince who is featured on the CD, Monae says, “I’m just so thankful. He’s a genius in my eyes, and one of my musical heroes. He let me really trust my instincts and let me guide him. It was an unbelievable experience. I’m still pinching myself.”
