An essay written by Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg notes how Beyonce “took the world by surprise” last December with the unexpected, unpublicized release of her smash, self-titled album, followed by her sold-out Mrs. Carter Show world tour. For her part, Beyonce says in a video essay that being selected by TIME “[Is] not about fashion, or beauty, or music. It’s about the influence I’ve had on culture. And to be amongst the other influential people is a huge honor for me.”
Beyonce’s included in the category “Titans,” along with Pharrell Williams, whose essay by Justin Timberlake begins, “At 41 and still with the swagger and appearance of a college kid, he has been the biggest part of our soundtrack for the past 15 years. And you will never see him doing it without a smile on his face.”
It’s probably no surprise that Miley Cyrus is on the list, too. Dolly Parton pens that essay, noting that Miley was “smotherin’ and chokin'” beneath her Hannah Montana persona, “So she felt she had to do something completely drastic. And she did. She made her point, she made her mark, and more power to her.”
