Seventeen-year-old Zendaya Coleman has been selected to star in the title role of the Lifetime Television movie Aaliyah: Princess of R&B. The film is based on the Christopher Farley book Aaliyah: More than a Woman. She will record four Aaliyah’s songs for the film.
Coleman’s credits include the Disney Channel series Shake It Up! She is set to star in the new Disney series K.C. Undercover, and the Disney Channel original movie Zapped which premieres this summer. She was also a runner-up on Season 16 of Dancing with the Stars. Coleman released her self-titled debut album in 2013 and her first single, “Replay,” was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America for 1 million in sales.
Aaliyah passed away August 25, 2001 in a plane crash at the age of 22. She had just completed shooting her “Rock the Boat” music video in the Bahamas. Aaliyah was named Billboard‘s tenth most famous R&B artist of the past 25 years. She released three solo albums: Age Ain’t Nothing But A Number in 1994, One in a Million in 1996 and Aaliyah in 2001. She also starred in the movies Romeo Must Die and Queen of the Damned.
Aaliyah: Princess of R&B will be filmed in the summer and debut in the fall on Lifetime.
