As he prepares his next album, Usher details how he lives his best life in the September issue of O, The Oprah Magazine.
The singer candidly revealed that exchanging vows with Tameka Foster in 2007 was his biggest mistake.
“Getting married at 28. Most people probably think I regret it because I ended up getting divorced, but it helped me learn that sometimes I think I know more than I actually do,” he tells the mag.
Despite his failed marriage, the singer is all about family — the pair have two sons together. He revealed that his best family traditions are “red-cup celebrations.”
“Everybody’s hanging out on the lawn, drinking out of those plastic cups, eating fried chicken, and dancing to loud old-school music. Sometimes the simpler the celebration is, the better,” he says.
Usher also related the best piece of advice he was ever given. “‘If you stay ready, you ain’t gonna get ready.’ James Brown told me that right before we performed together at the Grammys in 2005,” he says. “I’ve never forgotten it, and I’m always telling people, ‘Well, James Brown once told me…'”
The issue is available on newsstands now.
