Tinashe currently is hard at work on recording her official debut album, following her two critically acclaimed mixtapes, In Case We Die and Reverie. The singer reveals that the new album’s lead single, “2 On,” was created to celebrate a milestone in her life.
“Well, I turned 21 recently, so I wanted basically to make a song that I could dance to and party to,” she tells ABC News Radio. “I really wanted to put out something that was just lighthearted and people would just want to jam out to.”
The singer also explains the song’s overall meaning. “‘2 On’ is basically like the new ‘turn up,’ or it just means, like, overly hype, super happy, super excited. It’s a metaphor basically,” she says.
The song features ScHoolboy Q, who Tinashe says compliments the song with his West Coast vibe. “He was just always kind of one of my favorite rappers that was coming out of L.A., and I think ‘2 On’ kind of already had that West Coast, kind of L.A. vibe, so I thought it was appropriate to get a rapper out of L.A. So it was just the perfect song. My boy Q,” she says.
With her fans anxiously awaiting her first official studio effort, Tinashe reveals what her loyal following means to her.
“It’s very special to be able to put out something that means something to somebody,” she says. “Especially someone you never met before or someone who lives maybe halfway around the world; and just to know that your music is reaching those people and touching them, like, that’s really, really amazing.”
Tinashe’s club anthem currently sits at #22 on Billboard‘s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. Her debut album is slated to arrive later this year.
