Last year saw Tank performing and recording alongside his TGT band mates Ginuwine and Tyrese. Since then, however, he’s decided to resume his career a solo act and he’s already debuted his brand new single, “You’re My Star,” which samples The Jacksons‘ “This Place Hotel.”
The crooner tells ABC News Radio why the song was the perfect lead offering from his forthcoming album, Stronger.
“It really set the tone for my project, and coming out with a record like that, with no nostalgic appeal, is definitely more of a fight,” he says. “Having the Michael Jackson bass line, and even having the Michael Jackson conversation, is definitely a part of the cheat sheet. It definitely garners more attention out the gate.”
The song, he says, is a feel-good record he wrote with everyone in mind. “When it came to writing this song, I wanted this song to be something that everybody could enjoy, from kids to the parents to the grandparents. I wanted it to be a moment where everybody comes together musically to share this moment,” he says. “When you’re riding in the car, you don’t have to change the channel when this song comes on. You can actually listen to it, that’s what I was trying to create.”
The new music not only is designed to appeal to a broad audience, it also reflects the the singer’s own mood. “I’m happy so the all the music reflects it and the tempo reflects it,” he says.
Tank’s sixth solo effort will serve as the follow-up to 2012’s This Is How I Feel. The set is due out later this year. Earlier this month, Tank launched the “You’re My Star” contest, which gives fans a chance to sing background vocals during his upcoming performance at the Essence Music Festival.
