Marion “Suge” Knight has been arrested for murder in the hit-and-run death of a man in Compton, California Thursday night. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department says Knight was booked at around 3:00 a.m. PT and is being held at the West Hollywood station on $2 million bail.
The Death Row Records founder apparently got in a fight on the set of a promotional shoot for the biopic Straight out of Compton, about the group NWA.
According to his attorney, James Blatt, Knight claims he was attacked by two people and while driving away, he struck his friend with his vehicle, killing him. Another man was injured in the incident.
The vehicle involved in the incident was described as a red Ford F-150 Raptor, similar to Knight’s vehicle, authorities said.
Knight remained at large for a number of hours after the incident. KABC-TV reports he arrived at the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department’s West Hollywood station early Friday morning, where homicide detectives interviewed him.
Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Lieutenant John Corina said earlier Friday that they weren’t calling Knight a suspect, but were “following up on what witnesses are telling us and we want to talk to him.”
Corina says witnesses at the scene said the incident “looked like it was an intentional act,” and as a result, police are “handling it as a homicide.”
Robert Smith says he witnessed the deadly incident. “I turned to look out, and I seen Suge Knight turn around and go to his car. Backed his car up and then put it in drive and then he hit Terry Carter. He ran him over twice.”
Knight was already free on $500,000 bail after being accused last fall of stealing a paparazzo’s camera.
In August, Knight was wounded in a shooting at a pre-MTV Video Music Awards party in Los Angeles.
Knight was also shot at a pre-VMAs party hosted by Kanye West in 2005.
