Sources tell Billboard, Ice Cube‘s son O’Shea Jackson Jr. will portray his father as a teen in film about the ground-breaking 1980s West Coast rap group that launched the career of Cube and Dr. Dre.

The role of Dre will be played by Marcus Callender, who has appeared in Criminal Justice on HBO and small roles in the CBS series Blue Bloods and Elementary. The mega producer reportedly wanted Michael B. Jordan from The Wire cast in his role, however Jordan is not available because he is filming The Fantastic Four.

The late Eazy-E‘s widow, Tomica Wright, was involved in selecting the man who will portray her husband, a man with no acting experience, Jason Mitchell, who reportedly won the role with a great screen test.

The film will be directed by F. Gary Gray whose credits include Friday, starring Ice Cube,  Set It Off and The Italian Job. He also directed Cube and Dre in their music video “Natural Born Killaz,” as well as Cube’s “It Was a Good Day” and Dre’s “Keep Their Heads Ringin’.“

Production is scheduled to begin in the summer.
