Tim Mosenfelder/Getty ImagesWhen a lightning round of questions in his Friday YouTube interview ended with the topic “Kendrick Lamar or Drake,” President Barack Obama did not hesitate to go American.
Adande Thorne asked the president, “If Drake and Kendrick Lamar got into a rap battle, who do you think would win?” Obama promptly chose the rapper from Compton over Canadian Drake. “Gotta go with Kendrick,” he firmly stated. “I think that Drake is an outstanding entertainer, but Kendrick, his lyrics, his last album was outstanding. Best album I think last year.”
Not surprising, considering that Obama already is on record as selecting Lamar’s “How Much a Dollar Cost” as his favorite song of 2015. Also, he recently hosted the rapper at the White House. Lamar says they discussed “topics concerning the inner cities, the problem, the solutions and further more embracing the youth, both being aware that mentoring saves lives.”
Lamar leads all artists with eleven Grammy nominations, including Obama’s choice for Album of the Year, To Pimp a Butterfly.
