Maxwell, who will be headling this year’s Essence Music festival, opens up about losing Prince, relationships and connecting with fans 20 years after his Urban Hang Suite album for the July cover story.
The singer tells Essence,“I never worry about whether I’m going to be relevant at this point, not because I feel like I’m so dope, but it’s just I play like I’m losing — even if I’m winning b –ecause it makes you work that much harder.”
“These records are so cathartic to me. I’m not here to be famous; I’m here to touch souls,” he adds.
Maxwell’s forthcoming album, blackSUMMERS’night, is available for pre-order on iTunes. Essence’s July issue hits newsstands on June 10.
