Christopher Polk/Getty Images for CoachellaMadonna smooched Drake onstage at Coachella Sunday, marking the music and arts festival’s most talked-about moment of the weekend — not just because of what Madonna did, but because of Drake’s reaction.
The kiss happened as Drake, 28, was seated onstage. Madonna, 56, slinked behind him as the music ended, tilted Drake’s chin backward, brushed her hair out of the way, and planted a kiss on his lips as the crowd cheered.
This wasn’t a simple peck. This was a full-on smooch, lasting a good seven seconds. The Canadian-born rapper slowly moved his hand to Madonna’s hair, but she pushed it away, continuing the kiss as Drake appeared to become more surprised by its apparent intensity.
As the kiss broke, Drake leaned forward, covering his mouth. It was difficult to tell if his reaction was shock, confusion, pain, or even disgust.
“I’m Madonna,” Madonna then declared, and walked away, leaving a still-stunned Drake behind.
“Holy sh*t, what the f**k just happened?” he asked, laughing.
Then again, Drake didn’t seem at all surprised when Madonna appeared behind him and tilted his head back, so it’s entirely possible the moment was staged. Especially considering that Madonna’s “Human Nature” was playing on stage when Madonna appeared.
The moment was ignited by Drake’s latest mixtape, which contains a track called “Madonna.” The Queen of Pop later divulged to Us Weekly that she’d love to go on a date with Drake, “and only kiss him.”
Of course, Madonna’s an old hand at these sorts of “spontaneous” displays of very public affection — remember her kissing Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera at the 2003 MTV VMAs?
