Island Def JamLudacris stopped by Tuesday’s Ellen DeGeneres Show to promote his newly released album, Ludaversal, his first project in five years.
The rapper explained why took so much time to record a follow-up to 2010’s Battle of the Sexes.
“Sometimes you gotta, you know, you gotta take a little time off,” the rapper said. “After seven consecutive albums, you have to go get inspired, live some life, so you have more to talk about, reinvent yourself and that’s exactly what this album talks about.”
As for his album cover, which shows his first car — the 1993 Acura he still drives — and his private jet, the rapper said it shows “the humble Ludacris on one end and then the extremely flexing Ludacris on the other.”
Ludacris also spoke about his romantic proposal to his wife, Eudoxie Agnan, which involved a private jet flight and a written proposal visible from the air. “I look at myself as a pretty romantic guy, you have to be creative, you have to be different and these things stick with women for the rest of their lives, so I had to go above and beyond,” he said. “I took her on a ride. We were on our way to Costa Rica and I had written in the grass her name and ‘Will you marry me?’ So once she saw it and we looped around. Of course she burst out into tears and was just extremely happy — it was a pretty original idea there.”
When asked what he would have done if Eudoxie had been asleep, he replied: “Oh, I would have jolted her awake, you damn right that cost too much money to do all that.”
An excited Ludacris, who stars in the upcoming Furious 7 due out April 3, added that he has a lot happening at once. “So basically, movie dropping, album dropping and baby dropping, so you know, we good,” he said.
