Def Jam RecordingsWhen two rappers link up for a collaborative album, there’s bound to be some competition and that’s exactly what happened while Lil Wayne and 2 Chainz recorded their joint project, ColleGrove.
In an interview with Genius, Wayne revealed that his collaborator made him raise the bar. “This whole album, he impressed me,” Wayne said. “If you ask the homies, my closest homies, what I told them, I was like, ‘Goddamn. He’s showing me something, so imagine what the listeners are going to think. Not that he wasn’t rapping before, but damn. He’s going crazy.”
As a result, Wayne adds that he had to be strategic on where he placed his lyrics. “So you always wanted to be first or last. So if you go back and listen, I was always first or last,” Wayne said proudly.
Last month, ColleGrove debuted at number 4 on the Billboard 200 album chart.
