Ledisi, Russell Simmons, Jermaine Dupri, Questlove React to Ruby Dee’s Passing

Astrid Stawiarz/Getty ImagesLedisi, Russell Simmons, Jermaine Dupri and Questlove from The Roots were among the members of the music community who immediately reacted on on Thursday via Twitter to news of the death of Grammy and Emmy-winning actress, writer and activist Ruby Dee. 

Ledisi wrote, “‘The greatest gift is not being afraid to question.’-Ruby Dee Thank you for being absolutely stunning.” Simmons tweeted, “Words cannot express how much Ruby Dee inspired me to be who I am today. I will miss her dearly…” Jermaine Dupri posted a story from Global14.com about her passing. QuestLove wrote, “Man. such a powerful magnetic human being. goodbye Ruby Dee.”

Public Enemy leader Chuck D posted “R.I.P Ms RUBY DEE.” The husband and wife duo Kindred the Family Soul posted a photo of Dee with her late husband Ossie Davis with the caption: “In the next life together #restinpeace #king #queen#ruby #ossie”

Singer/actress Amber Patrice Riley from Glee and Dancing with the Stars commented, “RIP Ruby Dee, I’m sure you and Ossie are slow dancing in heaven right now  beautiful woman, civil rights leader and amazing actress.” 

Dee’s family said in a statement that she passed away just before midnight on Wednesday of natural causes, at her home in New Rochelle, New York.   The actress and civil rights advocate appeared in films like The Jackie Robinson Story, A Raisin in the Sun, Do the Right Thing and Jungle Fever. She received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the 2007 movie American Gangster.  She was 91.
