R. Kelly is revealing how he’s maintained his longevity in the latest issue of V Magazine, which sees him gracing the cover alongside Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue model Irina Shayk.
“Musically and creatively I feel like I’m a survivor,” he tells the mag. “I do what I have to do to excite the crowd. I do whatever it takes to raise eyebrows and to win.”
Although controversy from the past seemingly looms over his head, Kelly explains how he’s mastered drowning out the critics.
“The more a soldier wins, the more the other soldiers want to take him out,” he says. “You have to know how to metaphorically and spiritually use your gift to be your shield. So I shield myself with my gift. I stay behind it and I continue to make music.”
Kelly’s keen ability to focus on his craft has led to the singer recording the follow-up to his latest album, Black Panties. He spilled that the next effort will be a sequel called White Panties. When asked what fans can anticipate, he replied, “You can expect a whole other level.”
The hitmaker, who is gearing up for his King & Queen tour with Mary J. Blige, also confirmed that he plans to record with MJB.
“It’s a very exciting thing when two people like Mary and me come together. I’m in the studio right now working on a song for me and Mary,” he shares. “I’m even looking forward to proposing that we do a whole album together. But this is the first I’ve mentioned it. The King & Queen album.”
