Kanye West is one of TIME magazine’s 100 Most Influential People, making the annual list honoring the artists, icons, and leaders who are shaping the future. In his wide-ranging interview with TIME, West — who’s also on the issue’s cover — touches on his ego, legacy, and giving back to world.
The rapper speaks candidly about his outspoken nature. “Every time I crash the Internet, it’s like this little drop of truth,” West says. “Every time I say something that’s extremely truthful out loud, it literally breaks the Internet. So what are we getting all of the rest of the time?”
West says he simply just wants to make the world a better place. “I don’t care about having a legacy, I don’t care about being remembered,” he says. “The most important thing to me is, like, while I’m here, while we’re having fun, while we’re going to sleep, and breathing oxygen and living life and falling in love and having pain and having joy, its like what can I do?”He adds, “We were born into a broken world and we’re like the clean-up crew.”
Tesla Motors and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk pens a tribute to the rapper in the magazine. “Now that he’s a pop-culture juggernaut, he has the platform to achieve just that,” writes Musk. “He’s not afraid of being judged or ridiculed in the process. Kanye’s been playing the long game all along, and we’re only just beginning to see why.”
Kanye’s wife, Kim Kardashian, is also mentioned among various influential celebrities, including Taylor Swift, President Barack Obama, Kevin Hart, Reese Witherspoon and many others.
