Columbia Records has announced John Legend was tapped to curate the official soundtrack to the newly released film, 12 Years a Slave, which will be available next month.
John worked closely with legendary film composer Hans Zimmer to create the 16-track project, titled Music from and Inspired by 12 Years a Slave, which includes contributions from Alicia Keys, Laura Mvula, Gary Clark Jr. and Chris Cornell, among others. Legend also lends his voice on a song called “Roll Jordan Roll,” currently available to stream via the film’s SoundCloud page.
“12 Years a Slave is a stunningly powerful film. I was so moved when I saw it. I felt every minute of it and was so inspired to contribute to the music of the soundtrack,”says John in a statement. “This album brings together some incredible artists from different places and different genres who have all been touched by the film. When artists are inspired by great art, it makes us want to create. This album is the result of that inspiration.”
The set will be released digitally on November 5, followed by a physical release on November 19.
