Following a three-and-a-half-year hiatus, Jazmine Sullivan has released her new single “Dumb” featuring Meek Mill, lifted from her upcoming, third album, Reality Show. The singer tells ABC News that she welcomes the pressure to live up to her fans’ expectations.
“It feels like I’m kind of starting all over again, so I’m up for the challenge though,” she says. “I love what I do and I’ve gained a whole new level of love and appreciation for what I do, so I’m up for the challenge.”
So far, she’s garnered positive feedback from her collaboration with the MMG rapper, which marks the first time the duo have ever worked together. Jazmine revealed that their song happened organically.
“I heard the track, I started writing to it and I was actually in the studio working on another song and Meek Mill happened to be there, the same day when I was working,” she recalls. “He kind of came into the studio and was like, ‘What’s up? I would love to work with you.’ And I was like, ‘Sure, yeah, that would be great.'”
She continues, “[Meek] asked if there was something that I can hear him on and at the time I wasn’t thinking, I kind of let him go and then I was like, ‘Oh my God, I have the perfect song.’ So, I got in contact with him and he came right in and cut his verse.”
The singer adds that her new offering is a great taste of what she’s cooking up on her follow-up to 2010’s Love Me Back.
“I think it’s a lot of mid-tempo, but I really think with this album there is a more current sound,” she explains. “I’ve always done a lot of different things as far as music-wise with the my albums, but with this particular album I feel like it’s going to attract a lot of younger kids who may not have been into my stuff before.”
Fans can expect Reality Show to arrive later this year.
