Janelle Monae and M.I.A. performed together Thursday night despite being thousands of miles apart.
According to Rolling Stone, they rocked M.I.A’s “Bad Girls” with M.I.A. in New York and Monae in Los Angeles, and their hologram images were projected on their respective stages for the finale of the 2015 Audi A3 launch. A press release stated that the event marked “the first hologram performance with integrated video mapping” and used “3D projection mapping to add layered depth of field perception with animated graphic content.”
Fan video from the New York venue was posted to YouTube.
In the past holograms have been utsed to present concert performances by deceased stars including Tupac, Eazy-E, and Ol’ Dirty Bastard. There were rumors that TLC would also use a hologram to include the late Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes in their concerts, however T-Boz and Chili have rejected the idea.
