Janelle Monae Fronts Pepsi’s “Now Is What You Make It” Soccer Campaign


ANDREW ZAEH/AtlanticJanelle Monae has been selected to help Pepsi launched it’s new global 2014 soccer promotional campaign, “Now Is What You Make It.”

In a newly issued 90-second ad, which debuted in 100 countries, Monae appears on the streets of Rio De Janiero playing a guitar and singing a cover of David Bowie‘s classic 1977 song “Heroes.” The song is also available for purchase on iTunes.

The ad also features Pepsi’s all-star soccer line up and arrives in time for the 2014 World Cup tournament, which will take place in several cities in Brazil beginning June 12.

“It was really cool,” Monae tells Billboard. “I admire all the players and soccer and just sports in general. The teamwork those players experience is very similar to how I have my own business, my recording label, my band and how we’re a team and when we have great shows at places like South by Southwest we can all just share in that moment and remember it for the rest of our lives. I was just excited to be amongst other people who can understand what that feels like.”
