Iggy Azalea Unimpressed by Matching Beatles’ Chart Feat; Questions Lorde’s Performance with Nirvana

Miller Mobley for BillboardMost artists would be honored to be mentioned in the same breath as The Beatles, especially when it comes to commercial success.  But Iggy Azalea? Not so much.

Speaking in the new issue of Billboard — whose cover she graces — the 23-year-old Australian rapper dismisses the fact that she’s the first artist since the Fab Four to have her first two debut Hot 100 singles, “Fancy” and “Problem,” occupy the #1 and #2 spots the charts simultaneously.  “It doesn’t mean anything,” says Iggy. “I’d rather be The Rolling Stones.”

Perhaps Iggy’s just trying to be provocative: she doesn’t seem to have a problem speaking her mind.  Take, for example, her comments to Billboard about her “authenticity” as a rapper, which has been questioned, since she’s a white female from Australia.

“We get so caught up, especially in rap, with what’s authentic, and I wish people would think more about what the f**k that even means,” she declares. “One critic was like, ‘Why didn’t you talk about more Australian things?’ I don’t understand why I’m supposed to write a song about living in the outback and riding a kangaroo to be authentic.”

Iggy also offers a different take on Lorde‘s well-received performance with the band Nirvana at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony earlier this year, during which Lorde was one of several singers who filled in for the band’s late frontman, Kurt Cobain.  Iggy says, “Nothing against her, but I think when you’re doing a tribute to someone that’s dead, generally it should be the person’s peer.”

“Lorde is not Kurt Cobain’s peer,” she continues. “No matter if she killed the performance or not, I just don’t think it’s appropriate.”

For the record, the members of Nirvana were very pleased with Lorde’s performance of their song “All Apologies.”
