BET Honors MC Lyte With I Am Hip Hop Award


Photo courtesy of MC Lyte on FacebooOften regarded as a true hip-hop pioneer, MC Lyte will be the next recipient of the I Am Hip-Hop Award during the BET Hip-Hop Awards 2013.

According to BET, the rap veteran is being recognized for her music, including 1988’s Lyte as a Rock, and her community contributions. The fem-cee used her celebrity status to establish the Hip-Hop Sisters Foundation, which grants full scholarships to deserving four-year college students, as well as the Hip_Hop Sisters Network, a platform designed for emerging female artists to showcase their talents.

MC Lyte joins previous I Am Hip-Hop honorees including Rakim, Russell Simmons, Salt-N-Pepa and Grandmaster Flash.

Hosted by Snoop Dog, the awards telecast will be pre-recorded inside the Atlanta Civic Center on September 28 and will air October 15 at 8 p.m. ET on BET.
