With ‘Toosie Slide’ being one of the most popular dances on TikTok and going viral on all social media platforms. Drake gave us new music to listen to in order to get us through this quarantine by releasing Dark Lane Demo Tape. This is Drake’s newest release since his 2018 album Scorpion, but it is said to be a tease for his sixth studio album that he promised would be released by the summer of 2020.
With Dark Lane Demo Tape it gives listeners the stage of feelings that they could be facing by being locked in the house due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Many people are going through a phase of being happy, bored so they create TikToks, and even in a dark place because of self-isolation. Maybe this is how Drake was feeling at some point when he created the mixtape?
Also, Drake continues to be the man with the bars that will be your next photo caption or tweet. “Spend too much time on captions, not enough on action” (War), and “I bought that girl a shovel because she gold-digging” (Landed). He even pays homage to Brooklyn with When To Say When by sampling Song Cry by Jay-Z and shouts out Static Major and Kobe Byrant “Rest in peace to Static, yellin’ “shawty want a thug,” ayy. Bottles in the club, ayy, know she wanna ***, Weezy played that for me and Kobe on the bus” (From Florida With Love)
Drake also includes features with artists like Future, Chris Brown, Young Thug, but he also includes younger artists like Fivio Foreign and Playboi Carti. Overall, Drake gave us a variety of music, a difference of subgenres, and shed light on the new generation of rap. The mixtape had a flow of different beats, vibes, and he had bars to match them. It gave us something that is chill, but also showed that Drake is still alive in the game.
