ABC/Lou RoccoEverybody is still talking about Rihanna‘s two-part video for “Work” featuring Drake. Director X, who filmed the video, shared what it was like working with her again after filming her very first visual for 2005’s “Pon De Replay.”
“She’s grown into an impressive woman. I was impressed to be around her,” he said during an interview with The Fader, “I’ve seen her around occasionally. To see her on that day — her vibe and her work ethic, and everything that’s going on — I’m really proud to see what she’s become.”
As for why they filmed “Work” at a chicken joint in Toronto, the director explained: “Every West Indian community has a restaurant that at nighttime is also a place you can go and dance. It’s not quite a nightclub but it’s more than just a restaurant.”
Rih’s mirror dance is a real thing too in the Caribbean culture. “It’s something that you see in these kind of places. There’s a couple of girls who get in their own zone and do their thing in the mirror,” he says. “The mirror is a real thing for women. The mirror dance is a real thing. It felt like a great way to give her a master performance, something that is about her that kept her in the situation.”
He also commented on social media suggestions that Drake and Rihanna were dancing too closely. “It’s dancing, so there’s a sexual energy. But the dance is not sex,” he says.
