Director Explains Concept Behind Rihanna’s Brit Awards Performance

ABC/Lou RoccoRihanna delivered a futuristic performance earlier this week at the Brit Awards, emerging on stage with fluorescent patterns projected on her body and opening with “Consideration” with SZA before dancing to her new single, “Work” with Drake.

During an interview with Vogue, Philippa Price, the director and multimedia artist behind the digitized settings, explained the overall concept and how the performance came together.

“Her team had seen some of my work and originally approached me about doing a video for her. That turned into creating this performance, which I’m really happy about. I much prefer creating performances,” he says. “Videos now are so accessible and, in a way, disposable. With a performance you are creating an experience, a special moment in time.

As Rihanna danced in a crop top and fringed harem pants, it was clear that she wanted to give viewers an unexpected showcase.

“I love contradiction. Placing things together that you would never imagine working is what creates the most interesting outcomes for me. Yes, putting ‘Work’ in the context of dancehall would be natural, but I never want to create anything that is expected,” Price explained.

Perhaps Rihanna will use more digital tricks when she embarks on her ANTI World Tour with Travis Scott, kicking off March 12 in Jacksonville, Florida.
