Migos “Culture II” [Album Review]

by

After years of being dismissed as a mumble rap laughingstock while steadily racking up certified street hits, Migos broke through to the mainstream in 2017 with the Donald Glover-approved hit, “Bad and Boujee.” The song reached the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100, followed by the No. 1 debut of Culture on the Billboard 200 album chart last January. They haven’t looked back since.
Quavo, Offset, and Takeoff need no introduction. The hip-hop trio hailing from Lawrenceville, Ga., Migos, released their third studio album, “Culture II,” on Jan. 26, 2018.

One year later, they’re back with the follow up, Culture II, which accomplishes the rare feat of sustaining itself over 24 tracks. Against all odds, they’ve found ways to improve on their signature sound. The album has been long awaited since the group released its 2017 album “Culture.” “Culture II” is chalked full of their usual themes — fast cars, sex, drugs — and it provides a lasting continuity and sound that fans and listeners are familiar with, while also featuring a host of notable rappers and artists.

Standing very tall at 24 tracks, and clocking in at one hour and 45 minutes, the follow-up sequel is a much bigger monster than its predecessor. Culture II has ample room for more than half a dozen further A-list rappers, among them Cardi B, {who is engaged to Migos’s Offset}, 21 Savage, Drake, Gucci Mane, Travis Scott, Ty Dolla $ign, Big Sean, Nicki Minaj, Post Malone, and 2 Chainz. The project includes singles “Stir Fry,” “Supastars,” and the Nicki Minaj and Cardi B-featuring posse cut “MotorSport.” The star-studded production credits include contributions from Pharrell (“Stir Fry”), Kanye West (“BBO”), and Metro Boomin (“Higher We Go”). It amounts to a more cultured sounding Migos on Culture II. While the rest of the industry continues to mimic and nitpick their sound, Quavo, Offset and Takeoff show they aren’t stuck on one note.

It is quite clear this is The Migos’ Show. From these new sounds, the sun won’t set on their reign in 2018.
