“Billboard” Officially Names “Blurred Lines” the Song of the Summer

It’s official: “Blurred Lines” is the song of the summer. Robin Thicke’s smash hit, featuring T.I. and Pharrell, ranks first on Billboard’s 2013 Songs of the Summer chart.

This is hardly a surprise, since “Blurred Lines” was number one on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart for 12 weeks this summer. It was knocked out of the top spot this week by Katy Perry’s new single, “Roar.”

Only two other songs in the history of the Hot 100 chart were number one for 12 weeks for the period between Memorial Day and Labor Day: Mariah Carey’s “We Belong Together,” which was released in 2005, and Brandy and Monica’s “The Boy Is Mine,” which ruled the radio airwaves in 1998.

Billboard also notes that Robin is the first lead male solo artist to have the song of the summer since Usher accomplished the feat with “Confessions Part II” in 2004.
